How To's

How to Pick Your Portrait Outfit

You did it! You booked your photoshoot! But how do you know what you should wear to it? Here are a few helpful tips to help you feel comfortable and confident.

1. Stick to neutral, pastel colors (with some exceptions)

This is the classic, timeless way to go. Neutrals look good in almost EVERY location. Whereas wearing a neon green sundress in the forest will be harsh on you and clash with the green of the trees.

2. Then add pops of color

Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE me some beautiful rich colors, but like with everything, moderation is key. Adding colors to neutrals you can’t go wrong. When done correctly, it can really transform your photoshoot to look even that much more professional.

3. Coordinate your colors, but don’t match

Whether you are doing a solo shoot or a huge family shoot with everyone and their mothers (literally), this is very important! Wearing all of one color can lead you to look like a blob rather than a human with a kickin’ body. Same goes for 2+ people in a shoot. Find your pop of color and then play off of that with different hues and neutrals.

4. Accessories, layers and texture!

These are your friends! Accessorize your outfit with headbands, bow ties, scarves, jewelry – get creative! Accessories can also be subtle props that have sentimental meaning to you. Layers and texture add dimension and interest in your photos. Ribbon, ruffles, and chiffon are all great examples of this.

5. Bring a couple different options

The worst case scenario is you bring too many and don’t wear them all. No biggie! I always tell clients to bring a casual outfit, a dressier outfit, and a backup for both.

6. Remain true to YOU

Ultimately these are just guidelines. It is YOUR shoot and you need to wear what makes you feel the best. The worst thing you can do when putting together your outfit is going with something that is not you. Remember, we want to capture the REAL YOU! That means that you might need to convince mom that you’d rather wear jeans and a leather jacket than that pink dress she bought for you when you were 12.

I know this can seem overwhelming. I am just an email away and would love to help you plan the perfect wardrobe game plan for your upcoming photoshoot!
